FINNISH DESIGN

With the cooperation of design galleries "SNORK MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY" and "ELEPHANT", FINNISH DESIGN will be held at "ISETAN THE SPACE" on the 2nd floor of the main building of Isetan Shinjuku store from Thursday, June 6, 2024.
This exhibition will feature approximately 30 designers from the 1930s onwards, including furniture, lighting, glass, and ceramic works, centered on vintage pieces.
It will showcase leading figures in Finnish modern design such as Alvar & Aino Aalto, as well as Ilmari Tapiovaara and Kaj Franck, who achieved international acclaim and supported Finland's golden age of design.
The exhibition will also feature next-generation designers such as Yrjö Kukkapuro, and Antti & Vuokko Nurmesniemi, up to the present day.
Even after the passage of time and the changing trends, the creativity of these designers continues to captivate us.
We will review the history of Finnish design by zoning the wide store space into Modernism (around 1930-1950s), Postmodernism (around 1970-1980s), and Contemporary (present), and displaying furniture, lighting, glass, and ceramic works from Finland, a country known as a design powerhouse, all together in chronological order.
This will offer an opportunity to understand the background of how small Finland became a design powerhouse and experience the creativity of its designers.
