A Curated Archive of Nordic Modernism

Established in 2006, Tokyo

ELEPHANT is a specialty store dealing in Nordic decorative arts and design objects from the 1930s onward, a period that marked the early development of modernism in the Nordic countries. Founded in 2006, ELEPHANT opened its physical store in Tokyo’s Omotesando area (Jingumae, Shibuya) in 2008.

Focusing primarily on vintage works from the 1950s and 1960s—when Nordic modern design gained international recognition—ELEPHANT selects pieces from a distinct perspective, guided by a consistent sense of aesthetics while remaining open to evolving perspectives and interests. Through extensive research based on a wide range of materials and references, we explore the background of each work and present its appeal in greater depth. We also believe that documenting the histories of designers and the cultural context surrounding their work, and passing that knowledge on to future generations, is an important part of our role.

At our store, we have organized designer-focused exhibitions, including our annual Erik Höglund exhibition since 2009, as well as exhibitions dedicated to Kaj Franck and Signe Persson-Melin. We travel to Northern Europe around five times a year to source works, carefully selecting each piece based on the knowledge and experience we have built over the years, with close attention paid to condition. We strive to offer objects that can be appreciated and cared for over the long term.
