      OIVA TOIKKA|1931–2019|FINLAND

Oiva Toikka was a Finnish designer and artist.
He studied ceramics at the Institute of Industrial Arts (Taideteollinen oppilaitos) under Elsa Elenius.

After graduating in 1956, he began his career as a designer at Arabia and transferred to the art department six months later.
In 1958 he held his first solo exhibition, presenting works including humorous and powerful animal motifs.
The exhibition was well received and brought a fresh perspective to the Finnish ceramics scene of the time.

In 1959 he left Arabia to support his family and continued his design activities while teaching at several schools.
In 1963 he joined Nuutajärvi as a glass designer, where he worked for many decades until 2019.

From serial products to unique pieces, Toikka brought rich narratives and free imagination to the medium of glass.
While Nordic design was often characterized by functionalism and rationality, he pursued forms that embraced humor, fantasy and elements of chance.

His activities extended far beyond ceramics and glass to include textile print design, graphic design, exhibition design and work for opera and stage productions.

His many honors include the Lunning Prize (1970), the Pro Finlandia Medal (1980), and the Kaj Franck Design Prize (1992).
