Tapio Wirkkala is one of the pioneers who, along with glass, spearheaded modern design in Finnish metalwork.
He, along with Bertel Gardberg, introduced a new direction in the field of post-war metalwork, where decorative classical styles were predominant.
He gained attention in a competition in the late 1940s and began collaborating with Kultakeskus in 1951. Over the next 30 years, he created numerous designs, significantly contributing to the modernization of the company's collection.

This is a brass candle holder with a simple geometric form, designed in 1957.

Structurally, it is presumed that the upper and lower conical parts were each carved, and screw holes were machined into the narrower end.
A hole for inserting a candle was drilled into the opposite side of the upper part, which was then joined by brazing through a disc-shaped plate formed by pressing.
The upper and lower parts are joined by a stud bolt with male threads at both ends.

The structure, where the upper and lower parts are separated at the constricted section, is believed to be for ensuring strength and streamlining the manufacturing process.
Additionally, the weight of the carved parts enhances overall stability.

※ There are small dents and minor scratches, but it is in good condition with no noticeable damage.

TAPIO WIRKKALA|タピオ・ヴィルカラ|1915-1985|FINLAND

Tapio Wirkkala is one of the most important figures who led Finnish design to international success and is one of the leading designers of the 20th century.
His activities gained momentum after winning the Karhula-Iittala glass design competition in 1946, and he established his global reputation through his exhibition design for the Finnish pavilion at the Milan Triennale in 1951.

He worked in a wide range of fields including glass, woodworking, metal crafts, and ceramics, collaborating with many companies such as Iittala, Kultakeskus, and Rosenthal.
He transcended genres from mass-produced products to unique art glass and sculptures, seamlessly bridging different realms such as nature and geometry, craft and industrial production, and art and practical items.
He achieved a high-level fusion of artistic expression and industrial production through a deep understanding of materials and beautiful forms.

At the core of his creative approach was the "sense of touch"; he meticulously examined forms by drawing hundreds of sketches and creating models, and implemented a unique design process involving repeated prototyping.
He was also strongly influenced by the nature of Lapland, and its landscapes and ice formations served as inspiration for many of his works.

He received numerous awards, including the Lunning Prize (1956) and Grand Prix in three categories—exhibition, glass, and wooden sculpture—at the Milan Triennale (1954 and 1957).
