ANNIKKI HOVISAARI｜1918–2004｜FINLAND
Annikki Hovisaari was a Finnish female ceramic artist and designer. She studied ceramics at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in Helsinki under Elsa Elenius. After graduating, she joined ARABIA as a designer in 1949. Working in the Applied Art Department led by Olga Osol, she designed a wide range of products including tableware and decorative ceramics. During the 1950s, Hovisaari also began creating one-off wheel-thrown pieces while exhibiting her work and making study trips across Europe.
In 1962, she won first prize at an international competition in Italy. Following the award, she held her first solo exhibition at the ARABIA showroom in Helsinki. In 1963, she moved to the Art Department, where she continued working as an artist until 1975. Hovisaari produced many works in coarse chamotte clay, combining pronounced throwing marks and robust forms with matte glazes. She also worked with cobalt blue, green, and turquoise glazes.
