Dora Jung was a leading Finnish textile artist.
Throughout her life, through tireless daily effort, she mastered materials and techniques, and was a craftsman-like artist who never compromised in realizing her expressions.
She developed traditional damask weaving techniques, creating modern damask weaves that reached the realm of art.
As a designer, she was also a pioneer who revitalized Finnish linen products through her collaboration with Tampella.
She studied in the first class of the textile art department at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, and immediately after graduating in 1932, she established her own weaving workshop, "Dora Jung Textil," at home.
While creating damask textiles primarily for churches, she actively exhibited her works at large-scale international exhibitions from the beginning of her career.
1937 was a significant year for her: she won a gold medal at the Paris World's Fair, large commissions led to the beginning of her collaboration with Tampella, for whom she later became an artistic advisor, and her cooperation with Artek began when she was responsible for the tablecloths and napkins at the Savoy restaurant, designed by the Aalto couple.
In 1938, she held a joint exhibition with Gunnel Nyman, a designer who was her friend and comrade since her student days. The two also exhibited together at Artek in 1947.
In 1956, at the "Linen Exhibition" held at Artek, Dora Jung unveiled her first products—linen items manufactured by Tampella.
These became eagerly anticipated designed linen products that harmonized with the modern design tableware embodying the "beautiful everyday objects" that had been steadily introduced since the early 1950s.
Among her numerous awards, her achievements at the Milan Triennale are particularly noteworthy: she won the Grand Prix for her works from her own workshop in 1951 and 1954,
and in 1957, she won the Grand Prix for products made by Tampella, achieving the remarkable feat of winning the Grand Prix three times in a row.
In 1979, she was awarded the title of Royal Designer for Industry (HonRDI) by the Royal Society of Arts in the UK.
