"Bölgeblick" won second prize in the pressed glass category at the Karhula–Iittala glass design competition held in 1932.
It was introduced internationally early on, being exhibited in London the following year in 1933, and manufacturing began in Karhula in 1934.
At the 1936 Milan Triennale, it not only won the Grand Prix for exhibition design but the "Bölgeblick" series also received a gold medal.
From around 1937, it began to be sold as the "Aalto" series, named after the designer.
The name "Bölgeblick" is said to be associated with the functionalist building "Café Böljeblick" which appeared at the 1930 Stockholm Exhibition, considered the starting point of Nordic modern design, and is thus believed to be a design born within the growing trend of Nordic modern design at the time.
In Finnish, "Aalto" means "wave," and the concentric circular form, spreading out like ripples, is a double entendre that also coincides with the designer's name.
The characteristic stepped rings not only beautifully reflect light but also offer the practical advantage of allowing the vessels to be stacked for storage.
They also served as a clever way to obscure bubbles and wrinkle-like marks often seen in mass-produced glass at the time.
It remains one of the representative products of Nordic modern design, with the "Aino Aalto" series still being manufactured by Iittala today.
This is a tumbler with product number 4056 and a capacity of 40ml, a model manufactured in Karhula from 1936 to 1938.
It was part of the series exhibited at the 1936 Milan Triennale, where it won a gold medal.
