ANTTI NURMESNIEMI|Antti Nurmesniemi|1927-2003|FINLAND

Antti Nurmesniemi was a Finnish industrial and interior designer. He majored in interior and furniture design at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. While still a student, he worked at Stockmann's design office, and after graduation in 1951, he joined the office of renowned Finnish architect Viljo Revell. The office won the competition for Hotel Palace, and Antti was responsible for the interior design of the sauna section. It was then that he designed one of his representative works, the sauna stool. In 1953, he married Vuokko Nurmesniemi, who worked at MARIMEKKO. In 1956, he established his own design office. He was active in a wide range of fields, from product design such as the Wärtsilä coffee pot and Fujitsu telephone, which were presented at an exhibition held with his wife Vuokko at ARTEK in 1957, to the design of Helsinki subway trains and transmission line towers, as chairman of the Finnish Association of Designers, and as an educator and lecturer for public buildings. He received numerous awards, including the Lunning Prize, the most prestigious award for Nordic designers, in 1959, and grand prizes in the exhibition design category at the Milan Triennale in 1960 and 1964.
