KUPITTAAN SAVI|1921–1969|FINLAND

Kupittaan Savi was a pottery manufacturer founded in 1921 in Turku, an ancient city in Finland, and operated until 1969. Kupittaan Savi products are characterized by their handcrafted decorations applied to molded forms, with many decorators and young artists involved in their creation. Motifs such as flowers, figures, and animals were depicted, and even with the same model, the decoration varied from piece to piece, giving each a unique character.

While Arabia, a leading Finnish ceramics manufacturer, engaged in large-scale industrial production, Kupittaan Savi, with its relatively small-scale production system, manufactured rustic, warm, and idyllic pottery that leveraged handcrafted decorations.

Marjukka Paasivirta, who became art director in 1949, along with designers Linnea Lehtonen and Okki Laine, developed simple and functional modern design products that were becoming trendy at the time. At the 1954 Milan Triennale, works by Marjukka Paasivirta, Linnea Lehtonen, and Orvokki Laine each won a silver medal, bringing Kupittaan Savi international recognition. In the early 1960s, Heidi Blomstedt designed sophisticated vases and other products.
