Item No.: AINO302
Designer: Aino Aalto
Maker: Karhula
Size: H:56mm φ:52mm 40ml
"Bölgeblick" won second prize in the pressed glass category of the Karhula-Iittala glass design competition held in 1932.
It was introduced internationally early on, being exhibited in London the following year in 1933, and manufacturing began at Karhula in 1934.
At the 1936 Milan Triennale, the design won the Grand Prix for exhibition design, and the "Bölgeblick" series also received a gold medal.
Around 1937, it began to be sold as the "Aalto" series, named after the designer.
The name "Bölgeblick" is said to be related to the functionalist building "Café Böljeblick" that appeared at the 1930 Stockholm Exhibition, which is considered the starting point of Nordic modern design. It is regarded as a design born within the潮流 of Nordic modern design that was spreading at the time.
"Aalto" means "wave" in Finnish, and the concentric, ripple-like form is a double entendre that also coincides with the designer's name.
The distinctive stepped rings not only reflect light beautifully but also offer the practicality of being able to stack the vessels for storage.
They also served as a way to make air bubbles and wrinkle-like marks, common in mass-produced glass at the time, less noticeable.
It is one of the representative products of Nordic modern design, with the "Aino Aalto" series still being produced by Iittala today.
This is a 40ml tumbler, product number 4056, manufactured in Karhula from 1936 to 1938.
It is part of the series exhibited at the 1936 Milan Triennale, where it won a gold medal.
The color is somewhere between 'AZUR' and 'SEA GREEN', and we have labeled it 'AQUA'. A rare color.
*In good condition with no noticeable damage.
As is characteristic of glass products from that manufacturing period, there may be air bubbles, wrinkles, and distortions, and individual variations in size and shape.
While noticeable damage has been noted, please understand that other minor scratches and scuffs are to be expected for an item approximately 90 years old.
As this is a rare item, it has been purchased according to different standards than our regular products.
