A cast-iron skillet from the “Nurmesniemi” series, designed by Antti Nurmesniemi in 1964.
It was produced by the Finnish foundry Högfors from 1964 to 1970.
Based on a geometric form, the skillet incorporates two handles of different sizes into the body, allowing it to be handled comfortably with either one or both hands.
This is the largest of the four sizes produced, with a matte surface finish.
* There is some cracking to the surface finish on the top of the lid handle. Otherwise in good condition with no noticeable damage.
Antti Nurmesniemi was one of the leading figures in postwar Finnish design.
He studied interior and furniture design at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in Helsinki and, while still a student, joined the Stockmann design office in 1949 under Werner West. There he worked in an environment that included Liisa Johansson-Pape, Olavi Hänninen and, later, Yki Nummi—designers who would go on to become prominent figures in Finnish furniture, lighting and interior design. His work at Stockmann included store renovations and design projects.
After graduating in 1950, Nurmesniemi joined the office of Finnish architect Viljo Revell in 1951. He took part in the Hotel Palace project, designing the sauna interiors as well as the horseshoe-shaped sauna stool, which became one of his best-known designs.
In 1953, he married textile designer Vuokko Eskolin, who was closely associated with Marimekko. Nurmesniemi established his own practice, Studio Nurmesniemi, in 1956. The following year, he and Vuokko Nurmesniemi held their first joint exhibition at Artek, presenting furniture, lighting, textiles and the enamel coffee pot designed for Wärtsilä, among other works.
His practice ranged from furniture, lighting and kitchenware to public interiors and exhibition design. He also worked on projects at an urban and infrastructural scale, including the Helsinki Metro rolling stock, designed in collaboration with Börje Rajalin, and transmission towers. In addition to his design practice, he taught at the University of Art and Design Helsinki and served as president of ORNAMO, the Finnish association of designers, remaining closely involved in education and professional organizations throughout his career.
Nurmesniemi received the Lunning Prize in 1959. His exhibition design for the Finnish section at the Milan Triennale was awarded the Grand Prix in 1960, and in 1964 he received a second Grand Prix for the Finnish section designed together with Vuokko Nurmesniemi. That same year, he was awarded the Pro Finlandia Medal, among numerous other honors.
