KUPITTAAN SAVI｜1921–1969｜FINLAND

Kupittaan Savi was a pottery manufacturer founded in 1921 in Turku, an ancient city in Finland, and operated until 1969. Kupittaan Savi's products are characterized by being primarily molded and then hand-decorated, with many decorators and young artists involved in their creation. Motifs such as flowers, people, and animals were depicted, and each piece had its own individuality because the decorations differed even for the same model.

While Arabia, a leading Finnish ceramic manufacturer, engaged in large-scale industrial production, Kupittaan Savi, with its comparatively smaller production system, produced rustic, warm, and idyllic pottery that showcased handmade decorations.

Marjukka Paasivirta, who became art director in 1949, along with designers Linnea Lehtonen and Okki Laine, developed simple, functional modern design products that were becoming trendy at the time. At the Milan Triennale in 1954, works by Marjukka Paasivirta, Linnea Lehtonen, and Orvokki Laine each won silver medals, and Kupittaan Savi became internationally recognized. In the early 1960s, Heidi Blomstedt took over the design, introducing sophisticated vases and other items.
