Item No.: EHSP014
Designer: Erik Höglund
Maker: Boda
Size: H:83mm φ:130mm
This piece features engravings on thick crystal glass.
Unlike traditional engraving, which involves superficial and delicate decorations created by rotating a copper disc, Erik Höglund primarily used grinding wheels to produce deep, rough decorative expressions.
By deeply grinding and carving the surface, steps are created, making the motifs appear more sculptural.
Furthermore, Höglund's engraved works were not drawn on paper beforehand but were etched directly onto the glass surface by his own hand.
This work strongly reflects the sculptural thinking of Erik Höglund, who studied sculpture during his student years.
(In later years, it is said that craftsmen performed the engravings based on his instructions.)
This model was designed in the mid-1950s.
It depicts six large-billed birds.
The cut signature is "Boda H553/1191".
*In good condition with no noticeable damage.
*Our shop issues certificates of authenticity based on our accumulated experience.
ERIK HÖGLUND|1932-1998|SWEDEN
Erik Höglund was a leading Swedish artist and designer.
After studying sculpture at Konstfack in Stockholm, he began his career as a designer at BODA in 1953, where he actively worked for about 20 years.
Inspired by various traditions and indigenous cultures, he pursued forms that exuded warmth, actively incorporating bubbles and distortions as part of the expression rather than flaws.
His unique worldview, which elevated the primitive to the modern, brought new possibilities of expression to glass art.
His unconventional style initially sparked controversy, but he built trust through his unwavering passion for creation and tireless efforts.
In 1957, he received the prestigious Lunning Prize, the most authoritative award in Scandinavian design, proving that his expression was "a part of Nordic design."
At 25 years old, he was the youngest recipient among the illustrious past winners, including Hans J. Wegner, Tapio Wirkkala, Kaj Franck, and Timo Sarpaneva.
In the same year, he won a silver medal at the Milan Triennale, solidifying his international reputation and rapidly transitioning from an "iconoclast" to "the darling of the era," marking a turning point in his career as a designer.
His activities were not limited to glass; from the early 1960s, he created works combining wrought iron and glass, as well as woodworks.
In 1968, he established the design company "Backström & Höglund AB" with Monica Backström, also a designer at Boda and his partner at the time, and worked on designs in a wide range of fields, including furniture and household goods.
Throughout his life, he created paintings and bronze works, and was involved in commission works such as church murals and furnishings, interior design, and public monuments, expanding his creative activities into various fields.
The artist in the glass factory who appears in the film "My Life as a Dog" by the Swedish master director Lasse Hallström is modeled after Erik Höglund, and the film depicts him before he gained recognition.
