Erik Höglund began designing wooden products in the late 1950s at the glass manufacturer Boda, and a collection using pine wood was released in 1960.
These wooden products were manufactured by skilled local wood craftsmen and sold under the brand name "Kopparfly," named after the village where Höglund lived at the time.
Later, the wooden products gained great popularity, and with the increasing demand, "Boda Trä" was established on the Boda premises.
Similar to his glass works, the rustic and primitive forms demonstrate his consistent design philosophy.

This is a children's stool made of beech wood, manufactured by "Boda Trä."
It is part of the "Play Furniture" series of children's furniture, which was unveiled at the NK department store in Stockholm in 1962.

ERIK HÖGLUND|1932-1998|SWEDEN

Erik Höglund is one of Sweden's leading artists and designers.
After studying sculpture at Konstfack in Stockholm, he began his career as a designer at BODA in 1953, where he worked energetically for approximately 20 years.

Inspired by various traditions and indigenous cultures, he pursued forms that conveyed the warmth of human hands, actively incorporating air bubbles and distortions as part of the expression rather than flaws.
His unique worldview, which elevated the primitive to the modern, brought new possibilities for expression to glass art.
Although his unconventional style initially sparked controversy, he built trust through his unwavering passion for creation and relentless effort.

In 1957, he received the Lunning Prize, the most prestigious award in Nordic design, proving that his expression was "a part of Nordic design."
At 25, he was also the youngest recipient among the illustrious past winners, including Hans J. Wegner, Tapio Wirkkala, Kaj Franck, and Timo Sarpaneva.
In the same year, he won a silver medal at the Milan Triennale, solidifying his international reputation and rapidly transitioning from an "heretic" to a "darling of the era," marking a turning point in his career as a designer.

His activities were not limited to glass; from the early 1960s, he produced works combining wrought iron and glass, as well as wooden pieces.
In 1968, he established the design company "Backström & Höglund AB" with Monica Backström, also a designer at Boda and his partner at the time, and worked on designs in a wide range of fields, including furniture and household goods.
Throughout his life, he created paintings and bronze works, and was involved in commission work such as church wall decorations and furnishings, interior design, and public monuments, expanding his creative activities into diverse fields.

The artist in the glass factory who appears in the movie "Mitt liv som hund" (My Life as a Dog) directed by the Swedish master Lasse Hallström is based on Erik Höglund, and the film depicts him before he gained recognition.
