Antti Nurmesniemi was a Finnish industrial and interior designer. He majored in interior and furniture design at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. While still a student, he worked at Stockmann's design office, and after graduating in 1951, he joined the office of renowned Finnish architect Viljo Revell. The office won a competition for the Hotel Palace, and Antti was responsible for the interior design of the sauna section. It was at this time that he designed the sauna stool, one of his representative works. In 1953, he married Vuokko Nurmesniemi, who worked for MARIMEKKO. He established his own design office in 1956. In 1957, at an exhibition held with his wife Vuokko at ARTEK, he presented product designs such as Wärtsilä's coffee pot and Fujitsu's telephone, and later designed the trains for the Helsinki metro and power line poles. He served as chairman of the Finnish Association of Designers and was active in a wide range of fields as a lecturer, educator, and designer of public buildings. In 1959, he received the prestigious Lunning Prize for Nordic designers, and he won numerous awards, including grand prizes in the exhibition design category at the Milan Triennale in 1960 and 1964.
