“KRENIT” bowl, designed by Herbert Krenchel in 1953.
In 1952, Torben Ørskov & Co, who was planning to produce a salad bowl, consulted Herbert Krenchel about how to combine thin sheet steel with plastic. Krenchel suggested using enamel instead of plastic, drew a rough sketch that same day, and after further research and development of the surface treatment, the “KRENIT” bowl was introduced the following year in 1953.
The bowl is formed from thin sheet steel, with glossy colored enamel on the interior and black enamel on the exterior. Only the outer surface is sandblasted with fine stone powder to create its distinctive matte finish. This surface treatment was developed by Herbert Krenchel and patented in 1954.
The name “KRENIT” is a combination of “Krenchel” and “Eternit,” a material with which he had been involved in research.
Awarded a gold medal at the 1954 Milan Triennale, “KRENIT” is one of the defining examples of Danish modern tableware from the 1950s.
The original version was produced from 1953 to 1966. In 2008, Normann Copenhagen reissued the bowl with a modified exterior surface finish.

Herbert Krenchel was a Danish engineer, materials researcher, and designer.
He studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Denmark and, after graduating, remained at the university, where he conducted research into materials and fibre reinforcement.
In the early 1950s, Krenchel began working in product design alongside his research and established his own design studio in 1953. That same year, he designed the 『Krenit Bowl』, which was awarded a gold medal at the 1954 Milan Triennale and became his signature design.
He went on to design tableware and household objects in materials including melamine and enamelled steel, bringing his expertise in material properties and manufacturing processes directly into his design practice.
