An object designed by Markku Salo in 1994.
It is one of a series of sheet-metal animals presented in “Aarikka 40,” an exhibition marking Aarikka’s 40th anniversary, in which Markku Salo participated as a guest designer. The bull is expressed geometrically through cuts and folds made in a single sheet of metal.
Unlike the standard unpainted version, this example is finished in black and is particularly rare. As the “aarikka” logo is absent from the side, it is believed to be a prototype.

Markku Salo is a Finnish designer and glass artist.
After studying industrial design at the University of Art and Design Helsinki, Salo joined the Finnish electronics manufacturer Salora in 1979. He worked as an industrial designer on televisions, audio equipment and other electronic products before being appointed as a designer at the Nuutajärvi glassworks in 1983.
Although glass was a new material to him, Salo drew on his experience in designing for serial production at Salora. He went on to create a wide range of glassware, including tableware and vases. By working closely with the manufacturing process, he developed a detailed understanding of glass and its production techniques. In 1987, he held his first solo exhibition at a gallery in Helsinki and began producing one-off pieces and spatial works alongside his designs for serial production.
From the late 1980s, Salo produced works influenced by postmodernism, incorporating references to ancient cultures and architectural forms. His experiments with glass and other materials, particularly glass blown into metal frames and mesh structures, became a defining aspect of his work and were developed across a wide range of art pieces.
In 1991, Salo left Iittala-Nuutajärvi and established his own design studio. The following year, he received a five-year state artist grant, which enabled him to focus on his artistic practice while continuing to work as a freelance designer. He also taught at the University of Art and Design Helsinki and other institutions.
His numerous honours include the State Award for Crafts and Design in 1989, the Georg Jensen Prize in 1990 and the Kaj Franck Design Prize in 2015.
