Dora Jung is a leading Finnish textile artist.
Throughout her life, she meticulously mastered materials and techniques through unceasing daily effort, and as an artisan-minded artist, she allowed no compromise in realizing her expression.
She developed traditional damask weaving techniques, creating modern damask weaves that reached the realm of art.
As a designer, she was also a pioneer who revolutionized Finnish linen products through her collaboration with Tampella.
She studied in the first class of the Textile Art Department at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and, immediately after graduating in 1932, established her own weaving studio, "Dora Jung Textil," at home.
While primarily creating damask textiles for churches, she actively participated in large-scale international exhibitions from the beginning of her career.
1937 was a significant year for her: she won a gold medal at the Paris World's Fair, began her collaboration with Tampella (who would later become her artistic advisor) through a large commission, and started working with Artek, designing tablecloths and napkins for the Savoy Restaurant, which was designed by Alvar and Aino Aalto.
In 1938, she held a joint exhibition with Gunnel Nyman, a designer who had been her friend and colleague since her student days; the two exhibited together again at Artek in 1947.
In 1956, at the "Linen Exhibition" held at Artek, Dora Jung unveiled her first products—linen items manufactured by Tampella.
These were much-anticipated designed linen products that harmonized with the modern design tableware embodying the "beautiful daily necessities" that had been introduced one after another since the early 1950s.
Among her numerous awards, her achievements at the Milan Triennale are particularly noteworthy: she won the Grand Prix in 1951 and 1954 for works from her own studio,
and in 1957 for products made by Tampella, achieving the remarkable feat of winning the Grand Prix three consecutive times.
In 1979, she was awarded the title of Royal Designer for Industry (HonRDI) by the Royal Society of Arts in the UK.
